De Lorean car

The De Lorean Motor Company (DMC) was an automobile manufacturer formed by John De Lorean, an automobile industry executive, in 1975. Despite being fairly short-lived – it faced receivership and bankruptcy in 1982 – the De Lorean Motor Company is well remembered among car enthusiasts for the single model it had time to produce: the stainless steel De Lorean DMC-12 sports car.  The stainless steel De Lorean DMC-12 sports car had gull-wing doors and a sticker price of $25,000.

De Lorean History

The John De Lorean was founded in Detroit, Michigan by John De Lorean in 1975. John De Lorean was a celebrated first-rate engineer, eccentric business innovator and the youngest person to become a General Motors executive. The capital for the new company chiefly came from a business loan from the Bank of America, but various partnerships and private investments also brought in money. One of the investors was Johnny Carson from The Tonight Show. Later on, money entered the company through a dealer investment program where De Lorean dealers became shareholders in the company. In addition to this, De Lorean sought incentives from various government and economic organizations and this is why the automobile manufacturing facility was built in Northern Ireland.

De Lorean Name

The name De Lorean is usually spelled De Lorean with a space, but DeLorean is also very common and some people even spell it deLorean, de Lorean or Delorean. Typewritten company documents used the De Lorean spelling, while stylistic representations, such as the ones on the cars, used half space instead of full space. This use of half space is probably why the DeLorean spelling has become so popular. It should also be noted that John De Lorean originally spelled his name John Delorean, but he changed it to the more Dutch-looking John De Lorean.

Today

Today, a lot of De Lorean cars are still on the road and estimates indicate that at least 6,000 of the original 9,000 cars have survived into the 21st century. An active fan community has developed around the cars and there are a lot of owners' clubs. When the De Lorean Motor Company ceased to exist, several other commercial enterprises was created since the owners of the cars needed somewhere to go for parts and service. One of the most famous of these are the DeLorean Motor Company of Texas, which owns the large remaining original parts stock from the factory, Unites States stock and original suppliers. When the trademark registration for the original company's name and logo lapsed, the rights for these were also acquired by the DeLorean Motor Company of Texas.

Since the original De Lorean cars had several quality issues, a number of aftermarket improvements have been offered over time and performance has been increased significantly. Engine swaps are also fairly common, where a larger PRV engine or completely different engine such as the Cadillac Northstar engine has been inserted. A less expensive way of achieving more power has been to improve exhausts, carrying out normal engine turning work, and installing turbocharger kits.

If you want to purchase a De Lorean built from a combination of new, original and reproduction parts you should expect to pay at least 42,500 USD (year 2006). Unrestored vehicles in good condition normally cost from 20,000 USD and up.
